CHURCH HISTORY
Bayside was founded twelve years ago by Senior Pastor, Ray Johnston. Bayside has grown from a gathering of five families in a living room to a weekly attendance of 10,000. Weekend services are high energy, and much of the growth has come as a result of un-churched people finding Christ through the services and ministries. Eighteen thousand households representing over 32,000 individuals are now connected into the life of Bayside.
Our passion is to be a thriving church that produces thriving Christians by maintaining a balanced emphasis on 1) outreach, 2) spiritual growth, and 3) leadership development. We believe that God has called us to be a church with regional influence. In 2005 Bayside raised funds to plant 15 – 20 churches in the Sacramento region over the next five to seven years.
The organizational culture at Bayside may be described as:
- Committed to doing what is right, best and ethical.
- Committed to applying the practical truths, promises, and guidance of Scripture on a consistent basis.
- Committed to reaching the lost and developing the believer.
- Focused on continuous improvement, striving for best practices.
- Committed to serving others with humility, accountability, and professionalism, no matter the level within the organization.
- Team oriented, entrepreneurial and with a strong sense of direction and calling. Bayside is not bureaucratic yet values process.
- Committed to being proactive in furthering unity among the staff and congregation.
- Entrepreneurial, creativity-valued organization with a mission-focused, “we’re-all-one-family” feel.
- A comfortable, welcoming, casual experience, while recognizing and valuing the high level of organization and professionalism required to create that experience.
- A “can do/will do, make it happen” environment.
CHILDREN’S MINISTRY OVERVIEW
Bayside Church and the Children’s Ministry operates out of its main location in Granite Bay. There are nine current Bayside church plants in the greater Sacramento area. The main sanctuary seats 2,000 in its attractive auditorium and encompasses 42,000 square feet. The Children’s Ministry area includes 30,000 square feet of child-appropriate space, designated almost exclusively for Children’s Ministry. Children, ages Pre-K through sixth grade are encouraged to participate in age level classroom teaching as the adult services are not geared for younger children. Bayside’s overall church budget is $13.2 million per year of which approximately $1.1 million is allocated for Children’s Ministry. The ministry has a highly developed volunteer recruitment, training and retention history with many dedicated servant oriented volunteers. Bayside Children’s Ministry serves over 1600 children and 500 volunteers weekly during the worship services plus midweek and special event programming. The Children’s Pastor will oversee twelve fulltime employees and approximately 150 part-time paid employees plus volunteers.
THE LOCALE
The unincorporated Placer County community of Granite Bay had a population of about 20,000 residents at the 2000 census and covers an area of approximately 25 square miles. It is situated on the north shore of Folsom Lake about 25 miles northeast of Sacramento on the eastern edge of the Sacramento Valley at the base of the Sierra foothills.
The community boasts of a very high quality of life due to its great location, sound community plan, first rate schools, low crime rate and excellent recreation opportunities.
Typically, summers are warm, while winters are cool with an average of 21 inches of rain per year. Summer average high temperatures are about 95 degrees, but with the usual cooling evening breezes average summer lows drop to about 60 degrees. Average temperatures in the winter range from highs of about 54 to lows near 40 degrees with an occasional frost.
The community was officially recognized as "Granite Bay" in 1987. As an unincorporated community, the Placer County Board of Supervisors is the local governing body, and a local Municipal Advisory Council provides input and advice to the Supervisors.
THE POSITION
Due to the rapid expansion at Bayside and the cities of Granite Bay, Roseville, and Sacramento, there is a need for a talented visionary leader to capitalize on the past growth and to take the Children’s Ministry to the next level. Bayside has a strong tradition of valuing children’s ministry as an integral part of the overarching strategy.
Currently, this position reports to the Ministry Manager, and indirectly, to the Executive Pastor/Chief of Staff.Peer positions include twenty two other Pastors. As a member of the pastoral team, this position will have input on vision and strategy for the church as a whole. There are twelve full-time and approximately one hundred fifty part-time positions reporting to the Children’s Pastor. The Children’s Ministry team is exceptionally talented, loyal to the ministry and, moreover, to the cause of Christ being faithfully facilitated into the lives of children and their families.
Bayside believes that no church can outgrow its Children’s Ministry and whoever wins the hearts of the children, wins the hearts of the entire community. Children’s Ministry at Bayside encompasses ministering to children from birth through sixth grade. The Pastor of Children’s Ministries is responsible for implementing a growing vision for Children’s Ministry that supports the broader vision of the church, and is responsible for acquiring and developing the staff, volunteers, and other resources necessary to support that vision. Characteristics
This role focuses on the strategic aspects and planning for Children’s Ministry, however, previous experience in day-to-day administrative leadership/management would be beneficial. The candidate’s experience should encompass a “big picture,” large organization perspective and ultimate responsibility for a broad scope of functions. The successful candidate could come from the private, for-profit or non-profit sector.
The candidate must understand how organizations function best, exhibit great people management and team-building skills and demonstrate the ability to lead an organization operationally through sustained growth and improvements. The person must be comfortable operating in an environment where there are visionary “gray areas” that value the ability to explore new opportunities and doing things not yet done.
Bayside has been very successful at addressing the needs of the California culture by offering a variety of ministry choices. As a result, the successful candidate will embrace Bayside’s philosophy of trying to work around “this or that” decisions and offer “this and that” where possible. Bayside believes that God cares about lost people and we will continue to grow as long as there are people in our region who don’t know Christ. As a result, bigger is better if it means more opportunity to change lives.
This must be someone that others want to comfortably follow; someone who inspires confidence and enthusiasm. The management style that best fits the organization is consultative, participative and consensus-building, yet decisive, holding people accountable. The person should be a coach, teacher and able to delegate effectively rather than micromanaging tasks. Proven abilities to lead and manage those who manage others is critical. This person should have a gentle, enduring style, yet be firm when needed. This is a role for a “servant leader”; someone who is committed to serving those he or she leads and views the staff as serving one another and the community. It is crucial that people be heard and their input considered before making decisions. A demonstrated ability to confront and manage conflict in a healthy manner is needed as well as an openness to be flexible to meet unexpected opportunities.
The successful candidate will be a hands-on, high-energy self-starter, though might appear laid-back. Rather than merely reactive, he or she will be proactive in giving insights that increase efficiency, service or improved decision making.
Bayside is a large organization, and the successful children’s pastor will see the value of establishing new systems, or improving existing systems to enhance consistency, quality, and effectiveness yet without adding needless bureaucracy or stifling quick response time and the entrepreneurial spirit. One should respond quickly to new opportunities while keeping the mid and long-term ministry goals in focus. The candidate should be capable of establishing direction, motivating and inspiring both within and outside the department. The person should be a learner continuously asking the question, “What can I (or we) learn from this?” Taking calculated risks should be encouraged for the sake of finding better ways, growth, or learning from mistakes.
The candidate must be a person of integrity and have a consistent record of truthfulness, fulfilling commitments, maintaining confidences and handling personal affairs honorably. He or she must exhibit a vibrant growing relationship with Jesus Christ and be comfortable in leading corporate prayer and teaching.
The selected individual will be intelligent, articulate and persuasive. Presentation, verbal and written skills must be proficient, using technology relevant to the role. In addition to communicating well within a team, he or she will need to communicate effectively with the larger community, especially in terms of clearly relaying spiritual issues. Good negotiating skills that create win-win outcomes are also needed.
This person will be a solid and supportive team player who will help make things happen. The candidate’s people management and relational skills should be excellent. Being dictatorial, condescending, or insensitive would not be acceptable characteristics. Rather, while this person may have high expectations of his or her staff, the candidate should be fair, understanding, trustworthy and a good listener, mentor and team builder. The selected candidate should be good at developing relationships based on trust and candor.
While the position will usually be 45-50 hours a week, it is expected that the person will place family needs first. The right person will demonstrate the ability to balance the needs of the job and one’s personal life.
OPPORTUNITY
This opportunity will be attractive first of all because the person is drawn to the mission of the organization. Additionally the person will want to make a major difference as a key contributor to a fast-growing, dynamic organization with a positive management style. Bayside Church is offering a competitive salary and appropriate benefits, coupled with a mission that is Jesus Christ focused and a beautiful place to live. Assistance with the cost of relocation is available. The selected candidate will be eligible to participate in ministerial allowances as related to Federal Income and Social Security tax.
Bayside’s vision, financial position, excellent leadership and desirable location make this an outstanding opportunity. |
Addendum 1: Bayside Core Values
What We Believe
Our Faith is based on the following Truths:
Jesus Christ
Jesus Christ is God, along with the Father and the Holy Spirit. He set aside the things he could do as God, and became a man. He lived a perfect life, then died on a cross, paying the penalty for our sins. Three days later, Jesus rose from the grave, conquering death.
The Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is God, co-equal with the Father and the Son. From the moment someone asks Jesus to be in charge of their life, the Holy Spirit makes a permanent home in that person, guaranteeing salvation, God's strength, wisdom and guidance in their lives.
The Bible
The Bible is the Word of God. People who were chosen and inspired by God wrote it. We can trust the truth of the Bible completely. It is the only perfect guide for how to live and what to believe.
Humanity
God created all people. Our potential to be like God in our character was damaged when we decided not to follow God, but went our own selfish ways. The only way for us to recover our relationship with God and our wholeness is by asking Jesus Christ to enter into and lead our lives.
Eternal Life & Salvation
God did all the work to make eternal life possible. There's nothing we can do to earn it. When we realize that we've turned away from God we simply need to ask God for forgiveness and put our life fully in the hands of Jesus Christ. When this happens, we're reconnected with God forever. Those who believe that Jesus is God, that he died and rose again, and ask Jesus to take charge of their lives are saved and will live forever in the presence of God in heaven.
Faith & Practice
Bayside recognizes that it cannot dictate in areas where the Bible is silent. Rather, each believer is to be led in those areas by the Holy Spirit. We agree to disagree, and to love each other.
In short . . . we take the Bible and Jesus Christ seriously but we're not legalistic, which means...
In essential beliefs we have unity.
"May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus.”
-Romans 15:5
In nonessential beliefs we have liberty.
"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm then, and do not let yourselves be burdened by a yoke of slavery.”
-Galatians 5:1
In all our beliefs we show love.
"Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.”
-I John 4:7

Addendum 4: Affiliations
With its roots in the Protestant Reformation, the Evangelical Covenant Church is a denomination that holds to the affirmations of historical Christianity regarding the Bible as the Word of God and the only rule for faith, doctrine and conduct.
What makes the Covenant unique from other denominations is the fact that while it strongly affirms the clear teaching of the Bible, it allows believers the personal freedom to have varying interpretations on theological issues that are not clearly presented in Scripture. The Covenant affirms as central to its life and thought five evangelical emphases:
