Developing authentic and faithful followers of Jesus, who actively introduce others
to the God of grace and truth

OVERVIEW

A Vision for the Future of North Suburban Evangelical Free Church

The people of North Suburban Evangelical Free Church authentically and faithfully follow Jesus Christ and intentionally introduce others to the God of grace and truth.  They seek to know God as He reveals himself through the Holy Spirit in His Word and in His Creation.  They develop relationships with Him through prayer and worship.  They seek to serve and honor God in every aspect of their lives.  They actively tell others about Jesus and serve people at every chance, recognizing that every person is created in the image of God.

This is the beginning of a new era for North Suburban Evangelical Free Church.  With a 50-year legacy of outreach, discipleship and service in the Chicago North Shore community of Deerfield, Illinois, this faithful church is poised for fresh vision and direction.

The church has known the stability and fruitfulness of the 25-year pastorate of Reverend Marty Voltz whose leadership helped to cultivate a culture of care and compassion and whose preaching ministry drew many to Sunday morning services, leading to active membership and service.

Precipitated by events leading up to and surrounding Reverend Voltz’s retirement in 2008, the church entered the initial stages of a season of transition.  For a church unaccustomed to dramatic change, this has been a challenging season and yet a strong core group of devoted members has continued to serve diligently, and ministries have continued to thrive under the leadership of a hard-working and committed staff.

This interim period between senior pastors has been a productive time of preparation for forward movement through the guidance of a skilled consultant who has also served as transition pastor and a group of elders who provide overall godly leadership and pastoral presence while defining the core values that will mark the church’s future.

The church eagerly awaits a new Senior Pastor with the anticipation that he will bring godly vision and wisdom, dynamic biblical preaching, clear direction, and highly effective, strategic leadership.  North Suburban Church is ready to move forward.

THE CHURCH

North Suburban Evangelical Free Church is located in the village of Deerfield, Illinois.  Even though Deerfield does not geographically border Lake Michigan, it is part of the group of northern suburban communities referred to as Chicago’s North Shore.

The church initially began in May 1958 with seven couples meeting for bible study and prayer in their homes.  Their desire to establish a church to serve the Deerfield, Northbrook and Highland Park communities led to North Suburban’s first official public service in the Masonic Hall in Deerfield in September 1958.  There were 53 people in attendance for worship and 32 in Sunday school.

The plow of Pastor Vernon Olson was used to break ground for the first church building on the current campus.  Each of the 50 members of the church guided the plow with attached ropes symbolizing pulling together to build the church, pledging their homes to secure the mortgage and 1500 hours of labor to build the structure.  The theme of the ground-breaking was “It Took a Miracle.”

During most of its rich 50-year history, North Suburban has enjoyed growth and vibrancy.  The church is part of the Evangelical Free Church of America www.efca.org and is located near the campuses of the denomination’s university and seminary, Trinity International University and Trinity Evangelical Divinity School.  Over time, North Suburban has been the church home of many of the two schools’ faculty and students.

In recent years, the church has experienced decline in attendance, largely attributed to a series of events surrounding transitions in leadership.  The key transition was the departure after 25 years by the church’s much-beloved senior pastor following an extended illness in his immediate family that consumed much of his attention over several years.  Just five years before this, the church also transitioned from congregational to elder-led governance, a move not fully embraced or understood by the congregation at the time.  In the midst of these and related events, congregational confidence in the church’s leadership began to diminish and many members left.

In spite of these circumstances, there are many positive factors at North Suburban; namely, a strong devoted membership core including many faithful volunteers and a capable, committed staff.   In the past year, new elders were elected; this group of men brings a new level of elder engagement with the congregation and provides intentional pastoral presence.   Almost two years ago, the church hired a consultant to guide the church in making a healthy transition to a new Senior Pastor, and he has served for over a year as Transition Pastor, turning the interim period into a fruitful time of healing and preparation.

Over the past two years, significant work has been accomplished in strengthening relationships among and between the Elders, staff and congregation.  The church now has a defined set of core values, measures have been taken toward financial and operational stability and confidence, and a stronger prayer focus has emerged.

Membership and Worship Attendance

North Suburban currently has an average attendance of 300 adults at its Sunday morning worship services with current membership of 270.   It is estimated that approximately 550 people consider North Suburban to be their church home.

As a regional church drawing members from communities as far as 20 miles away, the congregation is more economically diverse than what would ordinarily reflect its immediate surroundings.  However, the affluence of the North Shore and the associated lifestyle does influence the church’s culture and has strong bearing on its outreach into the community.

While the church still has many families and active programs for youth and children, the average age in the congregation is increasing.  Also, as families move further away to more affordable communities, many of these find churches closer to home.  One of the challenges facing North Suburban in moving forward is to cultivate an environment that draws younger families while still maintaining sensitivity to its long-term members.

Given the church’s history with attendance and membership, the perception is that there is much potential for a significant increase in both with the right leadership in place and a regained sense of stability.

Worship Services and Sunday Schedule

Since 2008, the church has held one 75-minute informal worship service on Sunday mornings with a 35-45 minute sermon.  The service is followed by an adult education hour.

Historically, the church has emphasized thoughtful and engaging worship services, incorporating a variety of musical styles from classical to contemporary.  Currently, the musical style for the service varies from week to week on a rotational basis, leaning toward the contemporary.  Besides regular use of choirs, worship bands,  and instrumentalists, the worship and arts ministry has at times incorporated storytellers, scripture readers, technical arts and media, visual arts, student musicians, and intergenerational choirs and worship teams.

On average, 75 children are in the Sunday School and nursery on Sundays with 40 volunteers who rotate from week to week.  About 60 – 70 high school and middle school students gather for a Student Worship Service followed by in-depth Bible Study.  Several classes meet during the adult education hour as well as a small group of college students that meet together for a class.

For many years, North Suburban held two identical worship services on Sunday mornings that ran concurrently with classes for children, students and adults.  Over the past five years, they also attempted a Sunday morning video café service and then a Saturday night alternative service, but neither generated the attendance that could sustain effectiveness.

Leadership and Governance

Since 2003, the church has operated under an elder-led form of governance.  Spiritual oversight of the church, the staff, and the ministries of the church is the primary responsibility of the Elder Board.  The Senior Pastor reports to the Elder Board, of which he is also a member.  All pastoral staff and program directors report directly to the Senior Pastor.  The Elder Board includes all elders serving a current term plus the Senior Pastor and, if there is one, the Executive Pastor.

Elders serve on the Elder Board (hereafter referred to as “the Elders”) for three-year terms for a maximum of two consecutive terms, requiring a year off the Board before resuming.  Elders not currently serving a term, along with Associate Pastors, are elders-at-large.

The Chair of the Elders presides over business meetings of the Elders, also serving as the Chair of the Church.

Currently, there are eight elected elders.

Staff

Under the current organizational structure, there are two full-time and 12 part-time staff members (not including the Senior Pastor).  These include an Associate Pastor of Worship and Arts, six ministry directors (Care and Compassion, Children Ministries, Global Outreach, Student Ministries, Life Groups and Pastoral Ministries), a business manager and office and support staff.

The staff is supported by a strong group of volunteers.

Ministries and Programs

Besides the Sunday School and Nursery provided on Sunday mornings, the children’s ministry offers a monthly event called “Family Fusion” to provide families with a night of fun and learning together, drawing about 75-100 people.  An annual “Sports Camp” outreach connects with 250 kids.

The youth group, in addition to the Sunday morning activities, sponsors Sunday night small groups, special trips and events and regular service opportunities at a children’s home, a nursing home for the elderly and a care facility for disabled adults.  Their theme for the year is “Putting God First” with a strong focus also on pursuing what it looks like to “get outside ourselves and to live for others.”

Care and Compassion ministries are an important part of the life of North Suburban with groups that serve both members and the community, providing healing and support for issues such as abuse recovery, codependency, divorce, grief, Parkinson’s Disease, financial management, sexual integrity and stepfamilies.

In keeping with one of its recently defined core values, the church has reinvigorated its small group program “Life Groups” with a part-time staff member dedicated to nurturing and promoting this ministry.  Currently, 56% of the congregation is involved in a life group.

Global Outreach has always been a high priority at North Suburban.  The church has supported missionaries from the very beginning and has continued faithfully over the past 50 years with 18% of the current operating budget designated for Global Outreach.

The church currently supports 16 missionary “units” (represented by families, couples or individuals), reflecting an intentionally reduced number to allow for a higher level of involvement with each missionary.

While not as active over the past couple of years, short-term teams have been an important part of the church’s missions program, with up to six teams sent per year.  North Suburban will send out at least one team during the summer of 2010.

Some of the church’s current partnerships include an organization in the Czech Republic (for 18 years), a Hispanic church and ministry in Chicago, a crisis pregnancy center, an agency working with needy children in Chicago and a Free Church Camp, among others.

North Suburban’s “Special Friends” ministry reaches out to a local nursing home for physically, emotionally or mentally handicapped adults.  The church buses 20+ members of the nursing home to church each Sunday, conducts services in the Home on Wednesdays (attendance 20 - 40) and helps them with various needs.  There is one-on-one Bible study and mentoring, a Christmas banquet for about 50 of the residents, and other activities.

The church is in a prime location to reach out to the Jewish community, given the large Jewish population on the North Shore and in Deerfield and nearby communities in particular.  Currently, there is a fellowship group called Chavurah that meets twice monthly, focusing on how the Old and New Testaments tie together to present the Gospel message.  The group is for “Jewish and Gentile Believers in Jesus” and enthusiastically invites participation and questions from seekers.  The church has recently begun a strategic partnership, which includes sharing its facility, with Adat Hatikvah, one of the oldest Messianic congregations in Chicago, furthering its commitment to Jewish outreach.

The Worship and Arts Ministry has contributed to outreach through a significant and effective history of outreach programming for both Christmas and Holy Week.

Finances and Facilities

The church currently operates on an annual budget of approximately $1 million.  For the 2010 fiscal year, the Elders made several budget cuts and requested staff to significantly reduce spending.  Monthly giving was below budget for 2009 but strong year-end giving made up for the deficit.  In spite of the challenging economy, the church has a solid balance sheet and has been debt free for over a year.

In addition to the Operating Fund, the church maintains designated funds for care and compassion, scholarships, the “financial freedom” program and a large reserve from an unfinished growth/legacy campaign.

The church’s facilities are located on approximately four acres on the corner of two main roads.  The Worship & Activity Center (auditorium) seats up to 500 people and was completely renovated 10 years ago into a visually attractive multi-use space with full technical support (sound, lighting, video, media).  Ample parking is available which includes the use of an adjacent shopping center for overflow.

THE LOCALE

North Suburban Church is located in Deerfield, Illinois, a suburban community located 27 miles from Chicago.  The village of Deerfield is part of the Chicago North Shore.   Overall, the communities on the North Shore are comprised predominantly of families.   Residents tend to be well educated and affluent and are often very committed to their local communities and institutions, as well as prominent in organizations throughout the Chicago area.

The area became popular with the affluent wanting to escape the less desirable aspects of urban life and grew significantly in size just before and especially during the years immediately following World War II.  Huge mansions were built, although not all the homes on the North Shore are lavish.  Today the North Shore remains one of the most affluent areas in the United States.

In November 2007, BusinessWeek.com listed Deerfield third in a list of the 50 best places to raise children.  The rankings were based on five factors, including school test scores, cost of living, recreational and cultural activities, number of schools and risk of crime.

The Village of Deerfield was incorporated in 1903 and is located in Lake County with a portion in Cook County and covers an area of approximately 7.0 square miles.  As of the census of 2000, the population of Deerfield was 18,420 with 6,420 households, most of these represented by families.  Of the households, 43.9% had children under the age of 18 and the average family size was 3.21.  The median age was 40 years and the median income for a household in the village was $107,194.

Deerfield has six public schools including four elementary schools, two middle schools and a high school.  Neighboring Northbrook spends three times the national average on its school system.  There are a number of private schools, both parochial and secular, that serve the North Shore.  Over the years, many North Suburban members have sent their children to award-winning Christian Heritage Academy (K-12) located in nearby Northfield.

While Deerfield is highlighted because it is the village in which North Suburban is located and representative, overall, of the general vicinity, it is important to note that, as a regional church, most of the church’s membership lives in neighboring and surrounding communities.  In investigating the Deerfield area, information for the neighboring village of Northbrook, Illinois would also be highly relevant and is roughly similar.

THE POSITION

Introduction

The new Senior Pastor at North Suburban will be a vision caster, strategic planner and change agent.  He will have the experience and skill to lead this congregation to greater growth and vibrancy, in effect, leading the church through a turnaround, following its recent decline.

The new pastor will continue the process of leading the church in clarifying and reestablishing its identity and direction, work already begun by the Elders and Transition Pastor.

While priority is placed on finding a Senior Pastor who will appreciate and continue the church’s desire to cultivate an environment of grace, care and compassion, an even higher priority is to find a directional leader, who will communicate a compelling vision and motivate, inspire and equip others to achieve that vision.  The Senior Pastor will be highly strategic with strong planning and implementation skills.  He will lead through the ability to motivate and influence others and will be a team builder.

While the responsibilities described below are generally representative of the role, during the first year or so, the Senior Pastor will focus his energies on working with the Elders to develop and cast vision as well as begin to introduce measures to reverse the slide in giving and attendance.  Other high priorities include team-building with the staff, and implementing the defined core values.

Summary of Responsibilities

The core values of North Suburban Evangelical Free Church form the foundation for the responsibilities of the Senior Pastor.  His leadership will ensure that these values permeate congregational life and are reflected in the church’s priorities, programs and activities.

Through the power of
prayer,
God’s Spirit
and God’s Word:

Passionate Worship
We will passionately celebrate God's greatness and love, and experience his presence in ways that transform hearts and minds

Extravagant Grace
We will generously demonstrate God’s extravagant grace by loving, accepting, and forgiving everyone on our journey toward wholeness

Courageous Outreach
We will courageously share the life-changing message of Christ by acts of compassion and words of invitation across the room and around the world

Full Devotion
We will actively pursue lives of full devotion to Christ displayed by godly character, joyful obedience, responsible stewardship, and contagious faith

Authentic Small Groups
We will intentionally connect everyone in small groups where we experience spiritual growth, genuine community, and caring, accountable friendships

Healthy Relationships
We will sensitively equip singles, married couples, and families to navigate their unique challenges in following God's design for healthy relationships

The Senior Pastor will provide visionary and strategic leadership to the church, in collaboration with the Elders, to move the church toward greater vitality and effectiveness.  This will be demonstrated by spiritual growth within the congregation, a vibrant sense of community and fellowship, robust ministries, active congregational engagement in programs and outreach, and continual increase in membership with particular emphasis on growth through conversion resulting from outreach.

The Senior Pastor is responsible for implementing a dynamic preaching and teaching ministry within the church to ensure that the congregation is educated in biblical truth and insight, theology, Christian doctrine and personal application of biblical teaching.  One of his most significant responsibilities will be to proclaim God’s Word at worship services.

Other key responsibilities include:

  • Pastoral leadership and spiritual direction to the congregation and staff in worship and prayer, study of Scripture, mission, outreach and evangelism
  • Leadership, direction and development of the church’s ministry and program staff, promoting the effective functioning of the entire staff
  • General oversight and development of the church’s ministries and programs and administration of the ordinances of the church
  • Pastoral counseling, pastoral visitation, weddings, funerals and other similar events in the day-to-day life of the church
  • Representing the church within the EFCA denomination, to the community and beyond, including other churches and religious and civic organizations

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Ordination

The minimal educational requirement for the position is a Master of Divinity degree from an accredited theological seminary or divinity school. The position requires ordination by a recognized denomination or church organization.  If not already ordained by the Evangelical Free Church of America, the Senior Pastor must be willing to affiliate with the EFCA and begin the denomination’s ordination process within the first year of service.

Denominational Affiliation

While there is a strong likelihood that the preferred candidate will come from the Evangelical Free Church of America, there is clear openness to candidates from other evangelical churches that place emphasis on biblical authority and who demonstrate compatible theology and practices to the EFCA.

Experience

The desired candidate will have over seven years experience in pastoral ministry with at least three of those years as a Senior Pastor in a large (500+ members or growing), multiple staff suburban church.   An executive pastor or associate pastor with exceptional leadership abilities and preaching skills will be considered, given that other qualifications are met.

Leadership experience must demonstrate the ability to provide effective spiritual leadership to a large-sized organization, exercising maturity, wisdom and sound judgment.  Emphasis is placed on leading conversion growth in a large-city suburban setting.

Candidates should have ministry experience in the Midwest or demonstrate appreciation for and compatibility with the characteristics and nuances of Midwestern suburban lifestyle and culture, particularly, as influenced by proximity to a large metropolitan area.

This role is for a change agent who has demonstrated the ability through previous experience to exercise visionary, inspirational, and strategic leadership to gain momentum in moving a congregation or organization through a planned significant transition process.

The candidate’s experience must demonstrate the ability to recruit, motivate, organize and empower winning teams, with evidence he has served as a “leadership coach” effectively developing and equipping staff as well as other leaders within the congregation.

We are also seeking a Senior Pastor who has demonstrated the ability to promote congregational growth, both spiritually and numerically.  The church is highly committed to increasing its outreach efforts with the hope that this will result in conversion of unbelievers.  The significance of numerical growth is mainly in its reflection of the effectiveness of outreach, the response to a dynamic preaching and teaching ministry and the vibrancy and relevance of church fellowship and programs.  We are seeking a Senior Pastor who has demonstrated through his previous experience, the ability to accomplish these growth-producing objectives.

Of particular interest is experience in leading a church in outreach and discipleship since these represent prime opportunities for further development and growth within the North Suburban congregation.

One of the distinctive aspects of outreach for the church involves reaching out to and supporting its Jewish neighbors which makes up a significant percentage of the surrounding population.  While not mandatory, we have a strong preference for a Senior Pastor who has interest and experience in relating to the Jewish community.

CHARACTERISTICS, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

First and foremost, North Suburban seeks a Senior Pastor who meets the qualifications for elder as found in the following passages of Scripture: 1 Timothy 3: 1-7, Titus 1: 6-9 and 1 Peter 5:1-3.

The greatest requirement for the Senior Pastor position is passion for God accompanied by genuine love of people.  He must exhibit a deep, authentic and contagious personal relationship with Jesus Christ evidenced by a life of faith and obedience to God’s Word, and commitment to ongoing spiritual growth through active practice of spiritual disciplines and accountability.

While this can go without saying, we are seeking a man with highly developed spiritual maturity, evidenced by character, transparency, integrity and the ability to give freely of himself to ministry unencumbered by personal ambition or self-interest.

Theologically, he must place emphasis on the authority of the Bible as the inerrant Word of God and the final authority for faith and practice.  Doctrinal beliefs must be consistent with North Suburban’s statement of faith (see addendum).

In terms of spiritual gifts, North Suburban seeks someone with the spiritual gifts of leadership and teaching.  Secondarily, the gifts of evangelism and faith are strongly desired.

Given the challenges of a turnaround and the church’s desire for growth, there is strong emphasis on dynamic leadership in seeking the right person for this role.  The Elders seek a leader who is strategic and visionary, a big picture thinker able to convey a compelling vision and clear direction and to back this with planning, execution and creative problem solving.  This is a role for a builder rather than a maintainer, someone who is willing to take risks and to chart a course, someone who sets goals and overcomes obstacles in order to accomplish these goals.

The desired leader is someone who can gain the trust and confidence of the congregation and will motivate through influence and persuasion rather than exerting an authoritarian approach; he will have the ability and desire to build consensus.  This will be a relational leader who exhibits warmth, vulnerability, empathy and self-awareness, and demonstrates strong interpersonal skills in his ability to engage and interact effectively with the various segments of the congregation as well as the community at large.  He will serve as a mentor, coach and discipler, particularly with regard to developing staff and leaders within the congregation.  With his fellow elders, he will develop strong, collaborative relationships built on trust and mutual respect.

North Suburban is blessed with many members who generously give of their time and effort to the work of the church.  In building on this strength and further expanding congregational engagement, we seek a Senior Pastor who inspires lay leadership and volunteer involvement and implements initiatives to equip the congregation.

Two particular strengths are sought in a Senior Pastor in order to promote the congregation’s wellbeing:

  1. While this is not a conflict-ridden church, the ability to face and resolve conflict represents an area of growth.  Therefore, North Suburban seeks a leader who can model and teach healthy, biblically-based conflict resolution skills.
  2. Discipleship/spiritual formation is another growing edge.  We seek a leader who excels in encouraging discipleship and has the ability to integrate this into the church’s programs and culture.

Other desired characteristics include:

  1. Demonstrates godly wisdom
  2. Authenticity and awareness with regard to own brokenness
  3. Ability to extend God’s grace based on firsthand knowledge
  4. Speaks the truth in love
  5. Brings healthy and appropriate humor into situations
  6. Approaches controversial issues (e.g. abortion, divorce, homosexuality) with a sensitive balance between teaching truth and expressing grace
  7. Confident humility: strong leader, but also humble and gentle; not autocratic
  8. Unconditional love for people
  9. Handles criticism with grace
  10. Chooses battles carefully; firm in non-negotiable issues, flexible in all else
  11. Perseveres with courageous faith in the face of setbacks, conflict and the chaos of change
  12. Accepts responsibility for actions and doesn’t make excuses

Preaching Style

Preaching has been part of the heritage and DNA of North Suburban for its entire history, setting high expectations within the congregation for the church’s preaching ministry.  In addition, this emphasis is further influenced by proximity (five miles) to Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (affiliated with the EFCA) and several mega-churches with nationally known preachers.

North Suburban’s elders have given careful thought to the approach to preaching desired in the Senior Pastor.  They desire a Senior Pastor who can preach with biblical, theological, and communication excellence for life-transforming impact within contemporary culture.  They describe the church’s philosophy of preaching as “marketplace preaching” which follows Jesus’ model of taking the truth of God’s Word and communicating it in the language of the marketplace, speaking to both the felt needs and spiritual needs of the people.

Priorities for preaching include:

  1. Demonstrating utmost respect for the authority and power of Scripture; sermons emerge from biblical truths rather than from merely “applying” Scripture to the content with the desired result that sermons have a sense of spiritual depth and authority
  2. Sermon style that communicates effectively to both believers and unbelievers, including sensitivity to new believers
  3. Sermons that are not merely informational but have the goal of life transformation
  4. Emphasis on life application and infused with real life stories and examples
  5. Variety of sermons including topical, textual, and studies of books of the Bible
  6. Sermon presentation that is more informal than formal and more inspiring than academic
  7. Sermons that are both logical and creative with an impact that moves both hearts and minds
  8. Sermons that end with a high challenge to respond, obey and live out biblical truth in practical ways

Outreach Leadership

Outreach is a significant area of emphasis for North Suburban as part of the church’s shift to a more outward-focused orientation.  The church desires to grow through conversion as it reaches out to the community.

The following characteristics will be sought in the new Senior Pastor:

  1. Experienced in effective community outreach
  2. Effective at personal witnessing
  3. Models a lifestyle of relational evangelism
  4. Has the gift of evangelism, or of motivating and equipping others to evangelize
  5. Has a missional mindset
  6. Embraces North Suburban’s commitment to reach out to the Jewish community
  7. Able to integrate an understanding of the distinct culture of Chicago’s North Shore into outreach efforts

Special Consideration

In selecting the right Senior Pastor, consideration must be given to the distinctive characteristics of the Chicago North Shore, notably its wealth, the proliferation of prominent, influential individuals and the demand for excellence and high performance-orientation that this environment invokes.  It is important to note that given the regional draw of North Suburban, the congregation is made up of people representing a range of socioeconomic levels and not just the affluent.  However, given the church’s location and its outreach and growth objectives, the characteristics of the North Shore are relevant considerations.  Not only must the Senior Pastor be able to interact with integrity and gain credibility in this environment, he must soberly understand the implications for ministry, outreach and his own character.

COMPENSATION

The compensation for this position will take into account the cost of living and housing for the geographic area as well as salaries for comparable pastoral roles.  The church will provide for all relocation costs including assisting the Senior Pastor to secure a home within a 15-minute drive from the church.

THE SEARCH & SELECTION PROCESS

The Elders have retained The Dingman Company as consultants to the process and selected a nine-member search committee, representing leadership throughout the church.  Our firm will have the primary role for candidate searching, screening, and reference checking before recommending a slate of candidates to the search committee.  Donna White will serve as the primary consultant, assisted by colleague, Tim Bernstein.

This will be a nationwide search to find the man God has prepared as North Suburban’s Senior Pastor.  The Search Committee will present the final candidate to the Elders for approval and final congregational vote.

We are committed to a process that has integrity and is fair, considerate and thorough. Every effort will be made to protect confidentiality of all candidates with the final candidate’s identity being disclosed when the person is introduced to the church body as a whole. All serious candidates will go through the same rigorous evaluation process.

ADDENDUM

North Suburban Evangelical Free Church
Statement of Faith

  1. We believe the Scriptures, both Old and New Testaments, to be the inspired Word of God, without error in the original writings, the complete revelation of His will for the salvation of man, and the Divine and final authority for Christian faith and life. (II Tim. 3:16-17; I Thess. 2:13)

  2. We believe in one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. (Deut. 6:4; Matt. 28:19; I Cor. 8:6)

  3. We believe that Jesus Christ is true God and true man, having been conceived of the Holy Ghost and born of the Virgin Mary. He died on the cross a sacrifice for our sins according to the Scriptures. Further, He arose bodily from the dead, ascended into heaven, where, at the right hand of the Majesty on High, He now is our High Priest and Advocate. (Matt. 1:18-25; Luke 1:35)

  4. We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ, and during this age to convict men, regenerate the believing sinner, indwell, guide, instruct, and empower the believer for godly living and service. (John 7:38,39; 14:16, 17; 15:26; 16:13, 14)

  5. We believe that man was created in the image of God but fell into sin and is therefore lost and only through regeneration by the Holy Spirit can salvation and spiritual life be obtained. (Gen. 1:26, 27; 3:1-24)

  6. We believe that the shed blood of Jesus Christ and His resurrection provide the only ground for justification and salvation for all who believe, and only such as receive Jesus Christ are born of the Holy Spirit, and thus become children of God. (Isa. 53; I Cor. 15:3,4; Rom. 5:1,9)

  7. We believe that water baptism and the Lord’s Supper are ordinances to be observed by the Church during the present age. They are, however, not to be regarded as means of salvation. (Matt. 3:15, 16; 28:19; I Cor. 11:23-26)

  8. We believe that the true Church is composed of all such persons who through saving faith in Jesus Christ have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit and are united together in the body of Christ of which He is the head. (Matt. 16:16-18; Acts 2:32-49; II Cor. 5:8; Phil 1:23)

  9. We believe that only those who are thus members of the true Church shall be eligible for membership in the local church.

  10. We believe that Jesus Christ is the Lord and Head of the Church and that every local church has the right, under Christ, to decide and govern its own affairs.

  11. We believe in the personal premillennial and imminent coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and that this “Blessed Hope” has a vital bearing on the personal life and service of the believer. (Rev. 20:4-6; I Thess. 4:16-18)

  12. We believe in the bodily resurrection of the dead; of the believer to everlasting blessedness and joy with the Lord, of the unbeliever to judgment and everlasting conscious punishment. (Matt. 25:46; Rev. 20:11-15)
